Review: Beauty by Kroonen & Brown, Brussels + Exclusive Reader Offer!

Kroonen and Brown Beauty Shop, in Brussels

Kroonen & Brown is a haven of natural beauty products, in Brussels AND they’re offering our readers 3 great promotions to test out their day-spa and make-up services.

We all need a little pampering sometimes. Right in the heart of the Sablon neighbourhood of Brussels is a shop where you can enjoy a bit of decadent relaxation and rejuvenation. At Kroonen and Brown, you can indulge in day-spa treatments, treat yourself to a professional make-up lesson, or discover all-things ‘Beauty,’ with the help of the warm and professional staff.

With the stress of preparing for our annual trip to Canada mounting, I was desperate for a little ‘me time.’ When Sybille, a member of the Kroonen and Brown team, invited me to come and test out their services, I had three great reasons to say ‘Yes, please!’

First, I had met Sybille last year, at the Make Me Up workshop, and loved her natural approach to beauty. She respected my needs as a minimal make-up wearer and didn’t try to push products on me, I would never actually use.

Second, Kroonen and Brown uses and sells several natural, chemical-free, make-up and skin-care lines. As I’ve recently been transitioning our home into an ‘all natural’ environment, I was curious to discover their organic beauty lines.

Third, I had already heard of Kroonen and Brown’s great customer service, through the grapevine, and was pleased to see their services are multi-lingual. It’s hard to relax and enjoy a spa treatment while you’re trying to conjugate verbs in a language you’re just learning. Kroonen and Brown is expat friendly, offering services in French, Dutch, and English.

I was definitely ready for an afternoon of indulgence, at Kroonen and Brown, so I set off to check out their shop in Sablon.

The storefront is discrete and doesn’t belie the goodies hidden within. Stepping inside the bright white shop however, you are immediately surrounded by colourful bottles, boxes, and jars, filled with good things.

The first thing you notice is the wall of perfumes. Unlike the typical chain shops, Kroonen and Brown’s perfumes are hand selected for their fragrance and their story. Their scent expert can help you find the perfect fragrance just for you.

Beyond the perfumes is a world of colour. The make-up lines are all laid out for you to experiment with. I would be diving into those soon, but first, I had some serious relaxing to do.

Sybille escorted me to the cosy lounge space, where I could leave my things, grab a drink, and wait for my treatments to begin.

Time to lay back and enjoy my facial

It wasn’t long before I was relaxing under the hands of the spa technician and enjoying my Absolution facial. This skin-care line uses organic, natural ingredients, so I didn’t have to worry about harmful chemicals being rubbed on my sensitive skin. In fact, this was the first spa facial I’ve had that didn’t cause me to breakout in the days following. Normally, I have reactions to even sensitive skin facials. I have very, fussy skin!

Afterward, my skin was soft and glowing and I felt relaxed and ready for my next round of pampering.

Now I may not be big on make-up, but I do have one girly addiction – nail polish! My next treatment was a manicure and I was able to choose from a wide variety of polish colours from Koh Cosmetics, (free of formaldehyde, dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and toluene – nasty stuff included in many nail polish brands.) I opted for a summery, turquoise blue, perfect for a beach holiday.

The manicure included a hand scrub and massage, in addition to the nail shaping and polishing.

Once my nails were dry, it was back to Sybille for my expert make-up application. I told her about my concern about chemicals and she recommended the Jane Iredale line, which is free of chemical preservatives, FD&C dyes, synthetic fragrances and fillers, hypoallergenic, dermatologist tested, and against animal testing. Now that’s make-up I can get behind!

As I mentioned earlier, the great thing about Sybille’s make-up application is she works with you, to find styles and colours that make you feel comfortable. When I told her I was looking for a new lipstick colour, she tried three different shades, sensing my discomfort at her first suggestion. I left with the colour that suited my personal style.

She also filled me in on an insider secret that made my eyes look HUGE, with very little make-up at all. In fact, it was one of the first things my friends commented on, when I joined them, later that evening.

Sybille made sure to explain everything she was doing, step by step, so I could recreate the look at home. (Ok, if I’m honest I don’t do it as well as she does, but I can make a passable attempt.) She also let me know, I could come back any time for further explanation, if it wasn’t working for me at home.
