Monika and her family enjoy a farm-stay in East Flanders, Belgium, at the Green-Key certified Hoevehotel Ronse.
We were invited to Hoevehotel Ronse for a farm-stay recently, and it turned out to be quite an experience! We arrived one wet Friday evening at a quaint little property just outside Ronse, in East Flanders, Belgium and were welcomed warmly by the owner.
The Hoevehotel Ronse is a lovely family farm that promotes relaxation and enjoyment in congenial surroundings. The owners, Bert and Vero, are passionate about sheep and the entire property reflects this fondness, from the name of the rooms corresponding to endangered Belgian sheep breeds to the small knick-knacks adorning the property.
The rooms were much bigger and nicer than what you will see on the website. There are seven rooms in total, spread over two floors including one ground floor room with handicap access. Our room was on the first floor, with a comfortable bed and a little extra room with a bunk bed and a baby cot, perfect for large families. The room was spacious, clean, and the bathroom is functional. Even though the room was facing the road, it was quiet and had a view of the surrounding hills.
We had dinner the evening we arrived at the hotel and also breakfast the following morning. The dinner was wholesome and good, reflecting home-style cooking. We started with a nice carrot soup, which was delicious and healthy at the same time. The salmon was fresh, pan-seared, and it paired perfectly with the spinach quinoa and cherry tomatoes, served alongside. They also accommodated our request for a vegetarian meal, so nothing was too much of a problem. We paired our meal with white wine and finished with a huge serving of ice-cream with nuts. The portion sizes are generous, and the service is not rushed. Also, the entire experience of eating the meal in a huge, pleasant dining room with other hotel guests is nice. Breakfast was hearty; with particular attention paid to locally sourced foods (my family and I enjoyed the yoghurt from sheep’s milk) and is included in the price of the room.
Staying in the farm hotel gives you the advantage of getting involved in farm activities. Children can enjoy the daily farm feeding activities including feeding the sheep, offering carrots to the rabbits or just petting the animals. The farm has a total of 25 sheep, 20 rabbits, four female goats, pigs, chickens, and other animals.
Kids are always welcome at Hoevehotel Ronse, and there is a dedicated children’s area inside and multiple toys within the enclosed garden. The rooms are also geared towards large families. The owners are hospitable, and they are happy to serve special meals for the children; my three-year-old toddler had a great time at this farm hotel.
The hotel is located, with its magical remoteness, little more than an hour from Brussels and is an ideal base to discover Ronse. The overall atmosphere is relaxed, and comfort is key. The bar is open until midnight; the wifi works well, and there is free parking. The owners are passionate about the property and the animals, accommodating, and very hospitable. If you are looking for a holiday that gives you an authentic farm experience, where you can be one with nature, eat local produce, and get your hands dirty, go to Hoevehotel Ronse and enjoy the stay.
