The Carnival of Binche, in Wallonia’s Hainaut province, in Belgium, is a Mardi Gras festival so steeped in tradition and culture it’s been recognised by UNESCO.
Belgium’s four historic boat lifts, on the canal du centre, revolutionised transport in the 19th century. In the 21st century, Strépy-Thieu, the world’s tallest lift, did it again.
When I think about beer brewed by monks, I imagine dark, old buildings full of ancient brewing equipment, with a musty smell of old beer in the air. We recently travelled to Chimay to visit their brewery and to put my theory to the test. Boy, was I wrong!
