10 Gardens in Europe we Love
Spring is here and our thoughts are turning to visiting Europe’s best gardens. Today we share photos of our 10 favourite gardens in Europe.
The Netherlands was our first ‘home’ in Europe and, unbeknownst to us, was about to kick off ten years of expat life in the low lands. We visited Holland for a few weeks at a time on several occasions, before agreeing to a three month stay in Amsterdam. Those three months planted the seed that changed everything about the way we wanted to live our lives. Little did we know, almost exactly a year later, we’d be returning to live in Amsterdam for another three months, while getting our paperwork in order to move to Belgium.
The majority of the articles in this section are from long before we ever thought of making a living from CheeseWeb and well before Alison built a career as a travel writer. While we’re rather embarrassed by the writing, we know there is still good information here, both about the places we visited and the feelings we felt as we embarked on this early stage of our expat life. We hope you’ll bear with the rambling words to find our passion for all things Dutch. We owe Holland a huge debt of gratitude for setting our life on the path it is today.

If you dig way, way back in the CheeseWeb archives, you’ll find the saga of our arrival in Europe. Those days, CheeseWeb was simply a personal journal for my close friends and family, back home in Canada. You’ll find a lot of (badly written) posts about our time in Amsterdam, from 2004 and 2005, but since those days, I’ve written very little about one of my favourite cities in the world.
Despite the relatively short time we spent living there, (7 months in total) it still feels like home, when we visit. So today I’d like to share a bit of my Amsterdam with you, with six things I miss about Amsterdam.
We have loads of food options in Brussels. I’ve fallen in love with cuisines I had never even tasted before settling in Belgium. But still, there is no decent Mexican restaurant in Brussels. If we want a nice, sit-down dinner of incredible Mexican food, we need to drive to Amsterdam. We NEED Los Pilones.
What happens when you cross the World’s Fair with a garden expo and shake it all up with Dutch organisation and ingenuity? You get Floriade – The World Horticultural Expo in Venlo, the Netherlands.
As much as we love all natural environments, we love being on the coast most of all. We share the best beaches in the world we’ve visited so far.
Owned by Royal FloraHolland, the Aalsmeer Flower Auction in The Netherlands is the worlds largest flower distribution centre. It’s an easy day-trip from Amsterdam. We’ll show you how to get there and what to expect.
