I’m always eager to explore a new part of Belgium and when it’s with a local guide, even better. So when a friend offered to show me around her town, Beersel, just outside of Brussels, I was keen to see what she had in store.
With its Renaissance style architecture, terraced formal gardens and fascinating history, the Castle of Freÿr, on the Meuse River, would be at home among the chateaux of France’s Loire Valley. However, you’ll find it right here, in the province of Namur, in Wallonia, Belgium.
This entry is part 2 of 9 in the series Euro Summer 2013.As much as we love exploring Europe’s beautiful cities, we also enjoy seeing the countryside of this diverse little continent. That’s why I jumped at the chance to take a tour of the Danube Bend, while on my recent trip to Budapest, Hungary.

This entry is part 2 of 4 in the series Croatia and Bosnia. We spent a lovely day in Bosnia Herzegovina recently where we explored ruins, the countryside, a UNESCO site and, of course, food. It was a day we won’t soon forget. (If you missed part one of our day-trip read about Visiting Počitelj)

Andrew and I are always on the look-out for beautiful day-trips from Brussels. For Andrew, highlights must include winding roads and ruins to explore. For me, the criteria are picturesque scenes to photograph and a garden to stroll through. At Villers Abbey (abbaye de Villers in French), in Villers-la-Ville, we found everything we were both looking for. Belgium is famous for its abbeys, particularly those producing some of the many Belgian beers and cheeses. Unfortunately, Villers Abbey no longer has either, but there are crumbling ruins to explore and a lovely medicinal garden to wander through.
