Europe is the World’s Drunkest Continent
I just read an article over at Expatify titled the World’s Drunkest Nations. They pointed out that Ireland did not top the list as many a stereotype would suggest (They did however come in at #4). The top spot went to Uganda, “with a startling 19.47 litres consumed per capita.”
What I found most interesting about the study is that Europe was far and away the most alcoholic continent. I guess this shouldn’t come as a surprise, being the home of wine, beer, vodka and other liver un-friendly beverages. Out of the top 10, seven countries are European (and one is a French owned island).
Belgium surprisingly doesn’t make an appearance on the list until spot 22. I guess this is good news for all of those guys in the pubs with their breakfast beer. France came in 7th, Spain 16th and even the UK came in above Belgium in 18th position. The Netherlands was well down the list in 29th place. Obviously the Dutch are spending more time in the Coffee shops than the pubs.
My homeland of Canada ranked 47th. I guess alcohol is still too expensive in Canada. The United States out drank us to land in 43rd place.
To to my expat friends in Europe, be kind to your livers. Please drink responsibly. Visit the full list of countries by alcohol consumption.

I think one of the reasons why Belgium is surprisingly far down the list is because they only look at the amount of alcohol and not at the strength. There is a serious difference in drinking 1L of german beer or 1L of Duvel. That’s probably why Russia is so low as well, drinking vodka instead of beer
That’s a very good point Cedric. With that taken into account Canadians should be well higher up than Americans as well
& here you weren’t suggesting we go to Luxembourg
Haha, well Ame, obviously all there is to do there is drink
